How to Diagnose and Test an ECT Sensor

Step 1: Perform a Visual Inspection

Only replace the ECT sensor after confirming that the live data is incorrect, the resistance test fails, and the wiring and connectors are working properly. This helps avoid unnecessary replacement, because similar symptoms can also be caused by cooling system faults, wiring problems, connector corrosion, or ECU signal issues.
